What is the standard warranty for Scotchtint film?

3M™ warranties its Scotchtint and Prestige films against bubbling, peeling, cracking or crazing, and discoloration. If a product proves defective, we will replace the film and reapply it free of charge. 3M also warrants against glass failure due to thermal shock fracture or seal failure (maximum value of $500 per window) caused as a direct result of applying Scotchtint to the recommended types of glass. This failure must be reported within 60 months for thermal shock fracture or 40 months for seal failure if covered by original window manufacturer. You must pay a $25 consumer deductible or 5 percent of the replacement cost — whichever is greater.

Are other types of warranties available?

Yes. 3M offers an optional Platinum Warranty for residential applications. This matches the terms and conditions of your existing window manufacturer’s warranty for a mere $.35/square foot, giving you continuous coverage.

Do Scotchtint films cause glass to break?

Scotchtint films increase the temperature of sunlit glass, increasing the stress on glass edges. The risk of breakage depends on the quality of those edges and other factors — external / interior shading, glass history, type of film, size and shape of the glass, temperature indoors and outdoors. Based on our experience, we can recommend the proper films and glass to minimize the potential for breakage. 3M supports these recommendations with a 60-month warranty.

Do Scotchtint films cause seal failure when applied to insulated windows?

No. When recommended films are applied to the inside pane of an insulated glass unit, they will absorb some absorption of the sun’s energy (except for clear safety films), increasing the temperature of the pane. Some of this heat will transmit to the airspace, raising its temperature slightly. However, even a 20°F degree increase (unusual for most films) will result in a less than 3 percent change in air pressure; properly made units can withstand 22 percent changes. The risk of seal failure depends largely on the quality of workmanship and materials; it’s best to purchase units from reputable window manufacturers who have experience with insulated units.
